Are you a game designer?  I'm available as a mathematical and statistical consultant for your fledgling game. FAQ:

Q: What sorts of games can you help with?

A: I'm available to help with board games, card games, role-playing games, and mini games.

Q: What sorts of questions can you help with?

A: Pretty much any question involving random chance, such as rolling dice, shuffling cards, etc., or assigning numerical values.  For example, I could help answer:

  1. In my RPG Zoo Escape, If a player rolls 4 eight-sided dice and removes the lowest die, what is the chance the sum of the three remaining dice exceeds some value to flee the lion cage?
  2. In my card game America's Next Top Mathematician, what is the chance a player draws at least three coffee resource cards in his opening hand if his deck has 60 cards and 17 resources?
  3. In my board game Organic Limeade Stand, should I throw two limes at my opponent with a +1 bonus, or one lime with a +2 bonus?
  4. In my dinosaur battling miniatures game Cretaceous World, what point cost should I assign to the mighty T-Rex to make him fairly balanced and comparable to the wimpy plant eating dinosaurs?

These can be helpful for tasks such as picking threshold values for the difficulty of tasks, recommending optimal strategies for your dungeon master's manual, or tweaking the number of resources at a player's disposal.

Q: What sorts of help can you provide me?

A: I can provide interactive web-based or spreadsheet tools that let you tinker with values to find what works best for your game.  If you'd prefer, I can give you a simple table of values.

Q: What is your compensation for consulting?

A: A copy of your game for my personal library, and a small fee we negotiate.  The fee depends on the scope of your project and how much time it will take to provide the resources you request.  For example, questions 1, 2 and 3 above will take me 1/2 hour to solve and create the interactive tool.  Question and 4 might take several hours to understand the nuances of your game and deliver an appropriate analysis.

Q: What are your credentials?

A: I have a Ph.D. in applied math specializing in probability and statistics.  I have played dozens of RPG games, scores of card games, hundreds of board games, and several mini games, so I know a thing or two about math and games.

Q: What games have you consulted on?

A: The Dig: A Role Playing Game by Derek Kamal
